Leap Day Post : All Time Favorite : Tea Tree Oil

Yay it's Leap Day. Honestly didn't really think about how big of deal this day is until I was watching the news and seeing all the people at Disneyland because it is open for 24 hours for Leap Day. Particularly when they interviewed some people who's birthday is on February 29, and I thought to myself...

if I was born on the 29th would I celebrate my birthday on the 28th or 1st when it's not a Leap Year?

Random I know.

Anywho, I guess I just wanted to post in celebration of Leap Day and start a new series for this blog All Time Favorite(s) aka my Holy Grail items. Here I will share the items I constantly use and am loyal to. With a large rotating amount of products to choose from everyday and every season these items have stood through the test of time. My first item will be the Dessert Essence Tea Tree Oil.
Of course I'm going to say how much I love this item, because duh it's one of my all time favorites. But I do love it. This is my go to pimple remover and I love that its a natural oil. In my teens I used the typical products with salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide to spot treat my pimples, which worked here and there, but as I grew older into my twenties my skin became really sensitive to those ingredients and could no longer tolerate them. I recently tried to clear up some bumps lately and experimented on a acne kit from PCA which contained benzoyl peroxide as its ingredient and let's just say it wasn't pretty. I ended up with my eyes and face so inflamed it looked like I got stung by a bee. It did clear up my skin though lol, but NEVER AGAIN. I'm one of those people that keeps trying the same thing and hoping it'll result in a different way. Oh wait isn't that the definition of crazy. :-/

So since I cannot use those ingredients on face I started researching more natural ways to clear up my skin, and that's how I came across tea tree oil. The smell is really strong, it smells like vicks and menthol. But I love it, and my boyfriend loves it too. weirdo. On wikipedia it says that the indigenous people of eastern Australia(where the tea tree originates) inhale the oils to treat coughs and colds. It is also really powerful. If you do not dilute it with water and just willy nilly smear it all over you face you'll end up drying up your whole face. It can also be used for antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal and antisceptic healing. But I mainly use it cosmetically.

The way I use it is specifically for those inflamed red pimples that you know are going to grow. I don't really use it for pimples that have an exposed white head already because I don't really see a difference afterwards, I use it more like a preventive medicine. With a q-tip, I soak the q-tip first with water and then dip that into the oil helping to dilute it. Then spot treating my face very lightly. I have to emphasize on how you should not overdose your face with this oil. It's really drying. It even says on the back label Do not use full strength on face. lol. The next day my pimple is either smaller and/or gone.

I usually buy the Dessert Essence brand but I'm sure as long as it is 100% tea tree oil it should all work the same. The bottle I currently have has probably lasted me over a year because I can't recall when I bought it and I'm only half way through it and it's a .5oz. And I also have another bottle for traveling purposes so I unless I accidentally spill it all I probably wont be going back to the market to buy one of these for a long while. I have no clue how much this costs, so I'll try update that later.

Happy Leap Day!
I'm going to go watch this movie now ;-D

Nars Blonde Venus Lipstick

This poster just epitomizes a beautiful hollywood starlet. Did anyone watch the oscars tonight? I didn't...

I did watch the NBA Allstar Game =) Congrats West!

The poster really has nothing to do with this post other than the name 'blonde venus'. I was really happy to find this lip color. The whole nude lip is sort of hard to achieve for me because I can never find the proper color for my skin tone. But Nars Blonde Venus gets pretty close.
It is a light tan/peach color with a satin-matte finish. I found that the formula is actually sort drying in this formula, but of course if you apply some lip gloss then that wouldn't be a problem. And the color seemed to settle into the lines but other than that it has a good staying power(that's the great thing about dry lipsticks). I believe it stayed for 3-4 hours before having to reapply.

If it was a tinge more lighter this lipstick would probably wash me out, but it's seems to work out for me. Me likey.

This product retails for $24 and can be found at Nordstrom, Narscosmetics.com, etc.

Marilyn Monroe X Mac

I just saw this article on Refinery 29 and I immediately squealed with excitement. I love anything Hollywood glam especially with the likes of Marilyn Monroe. It sounds like it's going to be a large collections with over 30 pieces so I guess I'm going to have to start saving my moneys. I hope the packaging/design will be cute, like I've mentioned I'm a sucker for cute packaging.

What's On My Face: Valentine's Day Edition

I know it's a little late, like a week late but I just wanted to share my look for valentines day. I choose to do a pink-gold eyeshadow combination, for the occasion of course. I wish I could capture how the gold in the center of my lids did a sort of duo-chrome effect but I'm a terrible photographer, I feel incompetent when it comes to technology these days. It was really nice and metallic-y at night, well that's what a nice woman said to me(not tryin' to brag!).
Here are the products I used:
Tarte Amazonian Clay Matte Waterproof Mineral Powder Bronzer in Park Ave Princess
YSL Pure Chromatics in 6
Chanel Duo Tweed Effect Blush in Tweed Rose
Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler
Make Up For Ever HD Foundation in 140
Cle De Peau Concealer in Ochre
Sunday Riley Sheer Impact Lip Color in Beach Front (this is super super sheer, really light weight and ok taste but super sheer)
Maybelline Waterproof Liquid Ultra Liner
Maybelline the Falsies Volum' Express Waterproof
Urban Decay Primer
RMS Living Luminizer
Chanel Sourcils Sculpting Eyebrow Pencil Brun Naturel 30

MAC Call Me Bubbles Eyeshadow Quad

After seeing this on all of my makeup guru/blogger websites I thought to myself I think I need to get this. Then the thoughts went to I have to have this. Oh how I'm so easily persuaded by the makeup enablers. Anywhoo, the four colors on this quad in my opinion are beautifully coordinated and quite fitting for spring. But it probably will work year round because why wouldn't you want to wear orange and pink year round, especially here in southern california. This is from the Shop MAC Spring 2012 collection.
Here are my descriptions:
  • Call Me Bubbles (Satin) is white/beige with a slight shimmer. It is pretty sheer and and probably best used on the brow bone, the inner corner of the eye and as a highlighter.
  • Fresh Daily (Frost) is coppery/orange with tiny speck of gold. It is medium opaque and is simply stunning on the skin. If Snookie was an oompa loompa I would totally recommend this as a bronzing color lol (but I'm thinking she would use this as a bronzing powder even if she wasn't).
  • Full of Flavor (Matte) is a salmon pink in the pan but on the skin it appears much darker, almost a fuscia. You could probably use this color as a blush on darker skin tones so it could be multifunctional.
  • Brash (Veluxe Pearl) is a bronzy/copper color and is metallic in its sheen. It is the most pigmented shade on the quad and easily applies to the skin. This is my favorite shade out of all four and is like the showcase piece.
All of the shades are soft and smooth. They have very little fall out and apply really well to the skin. I will definitely try and create a eye look with this quad as soon as my skin clears up. I recently got a IPL and now I'm breaking out, ugh. My skin is getting so sensitive these days, and all I wanna do is try new skin products but I know it'll just create more problems. Rambling...

This is a limited edition quad and retails for $38. I would definitely try and swoop this piece up if you are interested in these colors.

Chanel Double Perfection Compact

I'm such a sucker for cute packaging. The main reason I bought this compact was because I wanted a large Chanel mirror for my to-go makeup bag, not gonna lie! lol This compact is huge, it's almost the length of my hand and what's great about it is that it's actually a great product. I myself am not a powder compact type of girl. I like to use liquid foundation and touch it up with concealer/blotters through out the day. I initially was going to return this product because I figured I might never really use it because it's not something I would use in my face routine. But upon using this product I found that it's very handy for travel and great for touch ups. My routine still consists of using foundation so I don't use this compact as my all over color. One thing I found was that the consistency can turn powdery if you're not too careful, so you can really cake it up if thats your style ;P. My color is Suede which looks kinda dark in the pan but when used as touch up product blends quite seamlessly with my foundation which right now is Chanel Perfection Lumiere in 30 beige.
I know this might be a little bulky looking to lug around in your purse but come on, we girls carry around a ridiculous amount of unnecessary things in our purses and so this wouldn't be much more to add. I love that Chanel products usually come with a velvet pouch, this really helps keep the compacts from getting scratched when you travel with them.

This product retails for $50 and can purchased through chanel.com or most department stores.

Chanel Roses Ultimate de Chanel Glossimers

I just got my hands on two new glossimers from the latest Chanel Roses Ultimate de Chanel collection. I choose Amour and Volupte. Both are pinky-coral's with only Amour being more on the pink side and with shimmer. I love love Amour, it's a perfect gloss for everyday and for some reason the color payoff is much more prominent than Volupte.
Here are some swatches:
In indoor lighting
In daylight
Overall if I had to pick one I would pick Amour, it looks way better in real life than these pics.

Barney's Love Yourself GWP

I think I found the Holy Grail of GWP. I have to admit, I don't really frequent Barney's but I sure will now lol. I believe they have two of these a year and I can't wait till the next one. The gift with purchase came in a nice blue and red makeup bag(there were also yellow ones), and it was substantial to say the least. Here are its contents:
I guess I didn't take a picture of the bag but I believe you can see it on The Beauty Look Book's post with her GWP. Along with all these great samples, they included 4 full size products worth $80+. So awesome!!
I got a full size Deborah Lippmann nail polish, Lipstick Queen lipstick, Sunday Riley lipgloss and a Kevin Aucoin lip gloss. To get the gift with purchase you had to spend $200 in the cosmetics department. But to me it was like $300 of product for $200. Can't beat that. I have some awesome products to show in the coming days, just been getting busy catering some parties lately =D.

Healthy Eats: Southwestern Black Bean & Corn Salad

I wanted to share a simple salad I made recently. I got it of the Skinny Taste website, and I've made it before and received many complements. In moderation this salad is quite healthy. (On a side note, I've been on a cleanse lately specifically the Beauty Detox Solution from Kimberly Snyder and she is adamant that you should not consume beans and oil, so I feel like such a cheater being on this 'cleanse' lol. But i'll eventually elaborate about this cleanse I'm on, and tell you how I'm doing) Anyways, the salad is really tasty and super easy to make.

What's On My Face

Here's another installment of What's On My Face, aka FOTD. I had gone to Barney's this day because of the fabulous gift with purchase in their Love Yourself event, shown on The Beauty Lookbook and Lola's Secret Beauty Blog(such enablers). The sales associate at the Clé de Peau counter tried on the Clé de Peau Refining Fluid Foundation on my skin and let me just say after having it on all day I luv luv luv it.
BUT I cannot bring myself to spend $120 on foundation alone. What to do...lol Anyway, that is the foundation I'm wearing. The GWP is amazing and I will have pictures of its contents. Needless to say I have much to show you guys. Let's get on with my face..
This is what I used:
Nars Paramaribo
Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-hour Blush in Peaceful
Clé de Peau Concealer in Ochre (will eventually have a review on this =D
Maybelline Waterproof Liquid Ultra Liner in Brown?
Maybelline the Falsies Volum' Express Waterproof in Black
Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler
Urban Decay Eye Primer
Chanel Sourcils Sculpting Eyebrow Pencil Brun Naturel 30
Clinique Colour Surge Eye Shadow Quad (2nd from the left - Daybreak, used for inner corners of eyes)
YSL Rouge Volupte Opera Rose

Rediscovering Revlon

After viewing so many posts about Revlon products such as lip butters and sleep and water's recent Revlon posts I decided to go to my local drugstore and peruse the makeup aisles. I honestly didn't know what I was looking for but I decided on buying a Revlon Colorburst Lipstick. Now I know these have been out for a quite a while now so I'm a little late to the party. I picked up Rosy Nude and was pleasantly surprised. First of all I really like the packaging on these, very sleek and modern.
It's a pretty good semi-opaque coverage lipstick. I would say it is quite moisturizing and the lasting power was pretty good for drugstore. When I swatched it on the back of my hand and had forgotten about it, it stayed on even after I took a shower. So now I'm probably going to go back to the drugstore to buy some more, hehe. But I'm waiting for a buy one get one 50% deal that they usually have. I missed out on the recent deal at Rite Aid, it just ended yesterday. Maybe next week.

Nars Paramaribo

Nars eyeshadows always have such wonderful colors. Most of them I think are quite unique and chosen really well for each of their collections. I especially love the pairings for their duos. Nars Paramaribo was something I was debating to get but after seeing so many bloggers feature it and swatch it I knew I had to get it. I just love bronzy-goldish type of shadows. These shadows are both slightly metallic but have sort of a satin shine as well, more so a mixture of both. They are very well pigmented and are finely milled. There is little to no fallout.
Above is a picture of the duo in less light. I find these two colors can be quite versatile and I just love them. This product retails for $34.

PS. This ad by Bare Minerals is somewhat similar to the effect of Paramaribo. Every time I see this ad I'm always like she's so pretty!

RMS Beauty Living Luminizer

Who doesn't want glowy skin? Matte skin is for vampires. I definitely have gone aboard the highlighter bandwagon. I would buy every highlighter I could, if I only had the means. But since I can only choose a few at a time I decided to try the RMS Beauty Living Luminizer. I have heard so many good things about this highlighter. And it does live up to its hype.

RMS Beauty is an all natural cosmetic line. Not just all natural but as stated on there website philosophy
rms beauty products are formulated with raw, food grade, organic ingredients in their natural state, allowing their living, healing attributes to penetrate and rejuvenate the skin. In their purest form, enzymes, vitamins, and healing properties remain fully intact, encouraging amazing potential for anti-aging effects.

In the pot it is very much like a balm. It is light vanilla in color and quite sheer, but is definitely buildable. The texture is also very balm like and when worn gives a lovely dewy glow.
This picture above shows how the sun reflecting off the highlighter on the back of my hand. It does not give off a white cast at all. The product does have a teeny tiny glitters but when swatched does not appear. I will probably later on in the week have a FOTD with this on(cross fingers, if my camera permits). Overall I'm pretty satisfied with this product and very happy to know it is purely natural and organic.
